The Town of East Lyme was incorporated in 1839 and is located in New London County. It is bounded southerly by the Long Island Sound, westerly by Old Lyme and Lyme, easterly by Waterford and Montville and Salem to the north.
Niantic occupies the relatively flat lands along the shore of Long Island Sound and in the early days was primarily sparsely settled farmland.
That changed when the fishing industry flourished in the mid 1800s. However, by 1880, the waters off George’s Bank became largely depleted and fishing ceased to be a significant industry in Niantic.
In 1852 the railroad brought many changes to Niantic. Also, people looking to escape from urban summers discovered the benefits and beauty of Niantic Bay.
As commerce shifted to the southern end of East Lyme, so did the population. Today, East Lyme and its village of Niantic offers a diverse mix of employment, shopping and recreational opportunities.
